It's Wednesday! How-To Be Thankful Everyday
Wednesday Sep 25, 2019
Wednesday Sep 25, 2019
Happy Hump Day Everybody! It is Wednesday, Sept. 25. I'm so thankful that it is Garbage Night. I was once kind of a Hoarder. Or a Hoarder-wanna-be! My daughter taught me to throw old stuff away. And I thank her for that. Today, I'm focusing on all the things I am thankful for and why I really must work to stay positive every day. I picked the selfie I'm using in this podcast because I love my curly hair. It's NOT naturally curly, I use hot rollers. I also love Pink, so I'm using it as the background.
All the little things in life can add up to good positives. Try it. Please subscribe. I'm thankful for my listeners and subscribers!

Asking For Help: One-On-One Communications
Tuesday Sep 24, 2019
Tuesday Sep 24, 2019
I'm going to begin this post with an ask. Please help me by downloading, sharing and subscribing to One-On-One! Whew! I have trouble asking for help. I'm afraid the answer will be no. I don't want to look weak. Maybe it's the way I was brought up. Don't ask for help, stand up and do it yourself. I think that advice from my Wonderful Mother was good for me for many, many years. But it's different when you are older and friends offer to help. Well, I stopped saying No Thank-you. And I am really enjoying myself. Try it. I think you will be surprised.

How-To Talk To Your Doctor
Sunday Sep 22, 2019
Sunday Sep 22, 2019
Talking to the doctor or any health care professional is not an easy one-on-one conversation. As a patient, we are coming into the conversation at a disadvantage. We are in a position of weakness; they are in a position of power.
We are sick, or injured or worried about this disease or that ailment; they, on the other hand, look strong, well dressed, clean and it is understood that they are highly educated.
But we need to remember it’s our body, our health is our life, literally. We know what hurts, how we deal with pain, we know our family history. We live it.
Don’t underestimate your power. That said, it is not as easy as it sounds.
It takes practice, determination, and chutzpah to have a good one-on-one; give and take the conversation with your doctor.
I’m Gloria Moraga,
Here is one of the first hurdles, many doctors are not great communicators. They are science nerds. They spent most of their time in school in the biology labs. If they took a communications class, it was way back when they were undergraduates. Medical School is long and difficult, and it is filled with older, smarter, demanding jerks, who are horrible communicators. Back in the old days, nobody would Ever recommend that a doctor or an intern take communication classes or a Comms. Seminar To learn how to carry on a conversation with a patient.
It just isn’t Done. Doctors heal! They are like living Gods on earth. We are just lucky to get a few minutes of their time! And the time we spend without doctors is getting shorter and shorter. So the time we spend with them is precious. So some of us are afraid to ask questions, challenge, ask for a second opinion. Say no, I do not want to take that drug or have that surgery or what are my other options or why are we doing it this way.
This is wrong!
They work for us. We are their clients, their customers, we pay their salaries! We are not Nothing!
I believe in my heart that doctors are basically good and caring. But I know in my mind that like any profession, there are bad doctors.
I wanted to quote the Hippocratic Oath at this point. One of the oldest binding documents in history, the Oath was written by Hippocrates is still held sacred by physicians: to treat the ill to the best of one's ability, to preserve a patient's privacy, to teach the secrets of medicine to the next generation, and so on.
I thought the Oath included the phrase, “above all, do no harm." It does not.
Hippocrates also said that it’s just not in the Oath. Hippocrates was a Greek physician born in 460 BC." Hippocrates is known as "The Father of Medicine." In the ancient western world, Hippocrates was regarded as the greatest physician of his day.
My point, above all, do no harm. Medical professionals are not there to hurt us, but it’s up to us to speak up and help them help us with our medical care.
So how do we do this, Gloria Moraga? We must speak up. Please try. Because sometimes you must be the squeaky wheel if you need oil. Make eye contact, ask questions. If you are confused, ask them to explain. Here’s a tip, tell them you are confused. You need a better explanation,
Don’t just agree to have a procedure if you are unclear that it will help you feel better,
When I had my recent hospital say, I repeatedly asked if I could have different pain medication. They were giving me OxyContin. I did not want it. I was in pain, but I wanted another pain pill. I repeatedly said I have a family history of drug addiction, I researched the fact that a person can become addicted to Oxy in about 10 days of continual use. All the research shows that addiction varies from person to person.
The nurses and others ignored me and kept pushing the oxy. Finally, I told the doctor I didn’t want it and she increased my other less addictive pain meds. When I got home, I stopped taking everything entirely. Yes. I was still in pain.
Pain is our body’s way of talking to us. Why do I want to drug out my body? I don’t. I want to get well, heal, some pain is not fatal. Drug addiction is another form of death for me,
My point is: I took control of the meds I want to consume. I’m not just going to pound down whatever they give me, how the hell did we get into this drug addiction mess that we are in. Too many prescriptions. Let’s wake up people.
So please, know what you want to say, have a communications plan. When you are getting ready to go to the doctor practice what you want to say. Write it down. Take your notes with you. If they don’t have time for you ask to speak to the nurse or physician's assistant. Make sure they note in your chart that you need, additional, information. You want someone to call you with more facts.
If you don’t like the way you are being treated or if they are not listening to you. Ask for another doctor. It is your right.
I get two or three guys to give me estimates to paint my hours. Why would I NOT get a second opinion to gave surgery on my leg? I want to walk! Walking is more important than a paint job.
I’m Gloria Moraga one-on-one Communications in the Digital Age. How to talk to your doctor or any health care professional. Don’t be afraid. Good luck!

Falling Down and Getting Up Again and Again
Friday Sep 13, 2019
Friday Sep 13, 2019
The number of older Americans who die each year following a fall is rising. According to a study by the Journal for the American Medical Association or JAMA the number of deaths for people over 75 doubled from 2000 to 2016. We are living longer, but now we are dying in great numbers just because we fall down. The worst part, many of these deaths can be prevented.
The image you are seeing is an x-ray of my right leg and hip AFTER surgery in August 2019. My bone is shown beneath the three screws doctors drilled into my femur and hip to repair the crack in my leg. Yes. I fell. And Yes! I have bone ISSUES. This is my story, but it is also about all of us who are getting older and who keep falling down. We can prevent most of these falls; with education. Here are some horrible statistics and some prevention tips.
According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention:
- One in four Americans aged 65+ falls each year.
- Every 11 seconds, an older adult is treated in the emergency room for a fall; every 19 minutes, an older adult dies from a fall.
- Falls are the leading cause of fatal injury and the most common cause of nonfatal trauma-related hospital admissions among older adults.
- Falls result in more than 2.8 million injuries treated in emergency departments annually, including over 800,000 hospitalizations and more than 27,000 deaths.
- In 2015, the total cost of fall injuries was $50 billion. Medicare and Medicaid shouldered 75% of these costs.
- The financial toll for older adult falls is expected to increase as the population ages and may reach $67.7 billion by 2020.
How to avoid falling, some tips from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention:
Tips
- Exercise. Get fit, Or as fit as possible, try yoga and ti Chi
- Be careful with your Medication. Try to get off sleeping pills
- Change your glasses. Don’t use bifocals or progressive glasses cause they alter dept perception.
- No more high heels or open shoes or SLIPPERS!!!
- Eliminate tripping and slipping hazards = NO MORE SMALL RUGS!
- Are you too proud to use a cane or walker? Get over it.
Thanks for listening and please share this life-saving information with someone you love.

Moraga Family Vacation - A Trip Through Hell: One-On-One Communications
Wednesday Aug 07, 2019
Wednesday Aug 07, 2019
The Moraga Family Vacation - A Trip Through Hell is my story that offers lessons on how NOT to vacation with your kids. Don't cram everybody in a car for a long road trip in the heat. Stay together. Talk to each other. Stay someplace with indoor plumbing. And make sure and see the local prehistoric carvings!!!
Summer family vacations are a perfect time for One-On-One Communications. Here are some of the great times to talk. There’s the long car trip. While you are waiting in airports, on the plane, by the pool, at the beach. These are great opportunities to turn off digital devices and talk.
Please don’t do any of the things I did as a kid. Our family vacation took us straight through Hell, California.
One exception, if you like the desert you might want to check out the Famous Blythe Intaglios. They are prehistoric geoglyphs in the Mojave Desert, near Blythe, California.
Thank you for listening, please subscribe!

The Boss Bully Part 2: How- to Survive a Bully at Work
Wednesday Jul 24, 2019
Wednesday Jul 24, 2019
The Boss Bully - How-To Survive and Thrive! I have been bullied by almost every boss I’ve ever had. Am I a victim-type? No Way! I am a strong, outspoken woman. I’m a second-generation American, a proud Latina, with a Master’s Degree in Communications, well-read, and digitally advanced.
Maybe that is why I’ve been bullied. And you know what, I don’t care why I was bullied. I care about those of us who are at the end of the Bully Stick. I’m not going to call us victims. We are Bullied! Period.
This is Episode 7 of Wanting Ice Water because sometimes work feels like you are in hell and "There's people in Hell who want Ice Water" and they ain't getting it.
I began researching Bullies in the workplace for the Wanting Ice Water Series. I feel it's all part of communications in the digital age because communicating with a bully is tough. Almost Next to Impossible.
I'm here to share stories and offer information. It's all about Self-Help!
Do you know there is a Workplace Bullying Institute? I found it online. They conducted a study of the issue in 2017. I will link to their study below. I will also link to information on the Healthy Workplace Bill, this legislation is at the center of a grassroots campaign to get the proposed bill enacted. It's all about Bullying and how this "American Epidemic" is making us sick. I agree! Totally.
IF YOU ARE BEING BULLIED, HANG IN THERE SISTERS AND BROS! Please subscribe and share. Love, gloria
Here are some findings from the Workplace Bullying Institute:
• 19% of Americans are bullied, another 19% witness it
• 61% of Americans are aware of abusive conduct in the workplace
• 60.4 million Americans are affected by it
• 70% of perpetrators are men; 60% of targets are women (THIS IS ME)
• Hispanics are the most frequently bullied race (THIS IS ME TOO!)
• 61% of bullies are bosses, the majority (63%) operate alone
• 40% of bullied targets are believed to suffer adverse health effects

How-To Look Better - Feel Better - Create Better Content
Tuesday Jul 16, 2019
Tuesday Jul 16, 2019
THERE ARE WAYS TO LOOK BETTER AND FEEL BETTER ON CAMERA AND THEN CREATE BETTER CONTENT. This works for creators, but it also works for everyone as they go about their day-to-day life.
Always take a moment to look in the mirror. The mirror can be your best friend or worst enemy; depending on how much sleep you are getting. I have a few rules about the colors I wear and the powder and brush everyone, especially men must use if they are going to appear on camera, tape a podcast, do a presentation at work or just go through life making a good impression. I hope my experiences help you.
