The phrase, “You’ve Come a Long Way, Baby,” was once an advertising slogan for CIGARETTES! The year was 1968, the Ad featuring a tall, slender woman in a pantsuit became sort of an unofficial slogan for the National Organization for Women and feminists all over the U.S.

At the same time, in the late 1960s, the Federal Communication Commission established rules to encourage radio and television stations to hire more women and minorities. That’s one of the reasons I got my first radio job. So I have real-life experience with Affirmative Action.  

In, 2021 most of us agree that cigarettes cause cancer, and, in fact, we still haven’t elected a woman for president. And many young women do NOT support Affirmative Action.

Everywhere I go, I see "We are Hiring" Signs. 

The economy added 850,000 jobs in June, says the Bureau of Labor Statistics, and the unemployment rate was 5.9%, little changed from 5.8% in May.

More importantly, wages are going up. Yay!!! Now is the time to get ready for your job interview.

Here is the scenario: I want to have a conversation about the Galapagos Islands. But the 13-Year-Old is watching a Funny TikTok video.

How does a person compete with that?

Cell Phone. TikTok. Raging Hormones. Three strikes and I am out!!!

But I didn’t give up. 

We’ve got to keep trying and talk to each other – One-On-One.

Depression Sucks - It killed May for me, but it can't have June.

I have two new Female heroes: Naomi Osaka and Serena Williams.  I don't play tennis, I don't watch tennis, but these two women athletes make me PROUD to be a woman. Naomi Osaka suffers from depression and anxiety. She's sorry about it. Serena Williams says, 'You have NOTHING TO APOLOGIZE FOR." 

Osaka is brave. Serena is a Champion! We are such a harsh, unkind, backward society. Nobody should have to apologize for suffering from a mental illness.

Local News Coverage is disappearing in America City-by-City. Critics of Television News shrug and say, “So What?” But when it happens in your town, it can be devastating. Think about it. No news from City Hall, no local traffic, no local weather. Sure. You can log on and check your phone, but if there are no local reporters, or news people, or meteorologists, who is there for you? An answer is usually a person working for a major conglomerate in another city, hundreds of miles from your home.

This scenario I described is happening in Casper, Wyoming. But there is a small but vocal grassroots effort to revive local news. It may result in the birth of a television station called Casper 1 - TV at a Higher Elevation.

Women continue to be hurt by COVID 19.

More than 2.3 million women have left the workforce since February 2020.  

Millions left the workforce to care for their children and to handle education responsibilities. The ones I've spoken with are not complaining. "Kids come first,"  is what I've heard.  

Still, it's going to be tough to get back to where we were. Now is a good time to talk to a woman you know. And say Thank you.

Anti Asian-American Pacific Islander Hate Crimes increased 150 percent in 2020 when compared to 2019.

According to the organization "Human Rights Watch," cities across the United States are seeing numerous attacks, especially against older people and women.

The City of Oakland, CA, reported 20 attacks during January 2021. Hate Crimes are happening everywhere, but New York City and the San Francisco Bay Area are experiencing the most blatant violence.

I  spoke One-On-One with Professor Timothy Fong from Sacramento State's Ethnic Studies Department. Historians say the United States has a long, dark history of discrimination against immigrants from Asia.

Jane Austen, the author of Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice, and other great books, wrote, “Let other pens dwell on guilt and misery. I quit such odious subjects as soon as I can, impatient to restore everyone to comfort and a happy ending.”

I agree with my sister Jane Austen 100 percent. In literature and film, in art and llife, I crave Happy endings.
