Anti-Asian American Hate Crimes Increase - One-On-One
Saturday Apr 03, 2021
Saturday Apr 03, 2021
If ever there was a time for all of us to stop and talk to each other about ways to end racism and Hate, THIS IS IT!
Anti Asian-American Pacific Islander Hate Crimes increased 150 percent in 2020 when compared to 2019.
According to the organization "Human Rights Watch," cities across the United States are seeing numerous attacks, especially against older people and women.
The City of Oakland, CA, reported 20 attacks during January 2021. Hate Crimes are happening everywhere, but New York City and the San Francisco Bay Area are experiencing the most blatant violence.
I spoke One-On-One with Professor Timothy Fong from Sacramento State's Ethnic Studies Department. Historians say the United States has a long, dark history of discrimination against immigrants from Asia.

One-On-One - The Movies and Happy Endings
Monday Mar 29, 2021
Monday Mar 29, 2021
Jane Austen, the author of Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice, and other great books, wrote, “Let other pens dwell on guilt and misery. I quit such odious subjects as soon as I can, impatient to restore everyone to comfort and a happy ending.”
I agree with my sister Jane Austen 100 percent. In literature and film, in art and llife, I crave Happy endings.
I had a great One-On-One conversation with my Movie Buddy and Nephew Joey Garcia. Our main topic was "WandaVision." He gives it 5 Stars, Two Thumbs Up. I have a problem with the ENDING!!! No Spoilers!

Positive Attitude - Communication Success at Work

How many times have you heard the phrase, “Choose Your Attitude?” It comes from Viktor Frankl.
This is a quote from Psychiatrist Viktor Frankl’s memoir, “Man’s Search for Meaning,”
“When we are no longer able to change a situation, we are challenged to change ourselves.” “Everything can be taken from a man (or woman) but one thing: the last of the human freedoms—to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one’s own way.”
Viktor Frankl was tortured and imprisoned at four different Nazi Concentration Camps between 1942 to 1945, including Auschwitz. His parents, brother, and pregnant wife all died.
Frankl’s theory, logotherapy, argues that we cannot avoid suffering, but we can choose how to cope with it, find meaning in it, and move forward with renewed purpose.
I love this. Please share and follow my podcast, Gloria Moraga - One-On-One

Listening - Communication at Work
Wednesday Mar 17, 2021
Wednesday Mar 17, 2021
LISTENING: It’s a communication skill that many of us don’t think about. We hear plenty. But we don’t listen.
Merriam-Webster defines hearing as the “process, function, or power of perceiving sound; specifically: the special sense by which noises and tones are received as stimuli.”
Listening means “to pay attention to sound; to hear something with thoughtful attention, and to give consideration.”
And there are different types of Listening—Appreciative, Empathic, Comprehensive, and Critical. For more on this, check out this article.

Giving Criticism - One-On-One
Saturday Mar 13, 2021
Saturday Mar 13, 2021
Giving Criticism is not as easy as it sounds. If you care about your co-workers, you don't want to hurt their feelings. But there are times at work when a critique is required. Like the annual review. While I have delivered dozens of reviews during my 10 years as a manager, not all of them were dramatic, but all were stressful.
Here is some advice from INC.com. The link is below:
AND #7 IS MY FAVORITE SUGGESTION! Talk to each other.
1. Be Straightforward
2. Be Specific
3. Criticize the WORK, not the Person
4. Don't Tell Someone they are Wrong
5. Say Something Nice - Compliment
6. Make Suggestions - Don't Give Orders
7. Have a Conversation

EVERYBODY is a Critic, a wise person once said. When you work in Television News, your mistakes and flaws are right there in viewers' living rooms in color and HD! There are definitely good ways and bad ways to respond to work critiques. I learned the hard way. Please don't do what I did. Do what I advise.

This episode's subtitle could be, "How I Ruined by Radio Career after Mispronouncing John Montefusco." It wasn't just the fact that I butchered the Giant's Pitcher's name on live radio. It was what happed AFTER that broadcast. My communication skills were non-existent after my first 10-hour radio shift.
But I learned from my mistakes; I'm sharing my tips with all of you now.
I am posting the transcript/blog to this podcast episode on my website.gloriamoraga.com.

Great Communication - Part 1 - Bad Paralanguage: Watch Your TONE!
Wednesday Mar 03, 2021
Wednesday Mar 03, 2021
Great Communication is a package deal. It's not only what you say when you are speaking but How you speak your words. Some of my biggest communication failures happened because of my Paralanguage. The jpeg says it all, "HOW I RUINED MY NEWS MANAGEMENT CAREER - PARALANGUAGE MISTAKES."
Here is the definition of Paralanguage from YourDictionary.com
"Paralanguage is nonverbal communication such as your tone, pitch, or manner of speaking. An example of paralanguage is the pitch of your voice. ... such as tone of voice, laughter, and, sometimes, gestures and facial expressions that accompany speech and convey further meaning."
My Podcast goals are to help all of you learn from my communication mistakes. This episode of One-On-One is the first of a Five-Part Series examining my big Comms. Blunders. I share my horribly stupid paralanguage mistakes in front of Broadcast Corporate Managers.
This is the first time I've shared this story, I had pushed it to the back of a drawer in my mind, and it was painful taking it out. I hope it helps someone. Please Subscribe!
The entire transcript of my script is going to be posted on gloriamoraga.com
